Nail Diseases

Your toenails and fingernails defend the tissues of your toes and finger. They are total up of layers of a toughened protein called keratin, which is also in your hair and skin. Your nails' fitness can be a clue to your overall health. Healthy nails are typically smooth and reliable in color. Specific types of nail staining and changes in growth rate can signal a variety of lung, heart, kidney and liver disease, as well as diabetes and anemia. White spots and upright ridges are harmless.

Nail problems that sometimes require action include bacterial and fungal infection, ingrown nails, tumors and warts. Keeping nails fresh, dry and trim can help you avoid some harm. Do not remove the cuticle, which can cause disease.
